British producer Steve Miller has been known under the sobriquet Afterlife since 1995 when he commenced his production project of the same name. Miller’s larger-than-life combinations of rhythm and melody provide beautiful and evocative music that prove both infectious and immersive for the listener. His collaborative efforts with other exceptional producers and vocalists combine to produce some of modern ambient music’s very finest pieces. These are compositions that are virtually impossible to hear without a very powerful emotional response being stirred within the listener. That is to say that they invariably stand out as milestones for significant feelings that we have all encountered at one point or another. Miracle, Midnight, and Deeper – Into Places immediately leap to mind as examples as very relatable and soulfully beautiful tracks. Take Me Inside is a simply breathtaking collaboration with Dannii Minogue that is, in every way, a joy for the senses and the spirit while 5th and Avenida and Show You Something demonstrate Miller’s versatility in an almost upbeat counterpoint. Afterlife music is impossible to pin down as mere dance or down-tempo electronica. It is all of these and so much more but, most emphatically, worth a listen.
